Vola Marie Castle ~ In Our Care ~ November 20, 2021

There’s more laughter in heaven now. Vola Marie (Maddock) Castle passed on November 20, 2021.

Born on a Missouri farm on November 27, 1929, Vola joined her parents, Frankie Brissy and Oscar (Shorty) Maddock along with her siblings: Florence, Polly, Bill and later, Carl, as the depression hit the U.S. Hard work was a given with no indoor plumbing or electricity.  Two mile walks to catch the bus to school were just a part of life in those days.   Yet there was always time for cards, games and laughter if Vola was present.

Always up for an adventure, Vola traveled with her sister Polly, brother-in-law Clarence and his brother Lloyd Castle to the state of Washington between her junior and senior years to earn money picking apples.  The day after graduating high school, May 16, 1947, Vola and Lloyd got married and started farming.  Until her own children were born, Vola was the handy babysitter for her two older sisters’ children (she was the fun aunt!). The nieces and nephews have many good memories of her teaching them to play cards. The winner had to kill ten flies with a fly swatter.  The loser got to kill ten flies with a newspaper.

Three daughters were born to this union: Lola Roberta (still born), Karla Jean (d. 2019) and Marie Ilene.  They moved to St. Joseph, MO and then to Sunland, CA in 1960 where Lloyd had a pool cleaning business and Vola went to work as a telephone operator just like her mother and Aunt Josie Turner.  Vola and Lloyd shared 59 years together till he passed in August of 2006.

Faith was a strong part of Vola’s character and she wanted to share it.  Every summer she was in Missouri, she would take her nieces and nephews, her children and eventually grandchildren to the Camp Farwesta Camp Grounds near Stewartsville for a wonderful week of camping and religious education.

One might say that Vola dealt with multiple myeloma for over ten years, But, it was actually the other way around.  Cancer had to deal with Vola! She never complained and continued to express her gratitude for all that God had given her.

Left to mourn the loss of Vola’s presence is her daughter, Marie (John) Temple, brother, Carl (Ilene) Maddock, sister-in-law, Bertie Maddock, five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Vola shared so many valuable life lessons with those around her: hard work and joy are each a rich part of life plus faith and relationships are essential for living life to its fullest. She lived a good life but not an extravagant one as she invested wisely and set up a trust fund for the education of her descendants.  The memory of her laughter will warm our hearts forever.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 28, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Turner Family Funeral Home of Maysville with memorial service starting at 1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions: Camp Farwesta

My Aunt Vola always made me feel special. My life had so much more quality because of her and my Uncle Lloyd.
