Barbara Joan Jones ~ In Our Care ~ April 30, 2022

Barbara Joan Jones

Maysville, Missouri…

Barbara Joan Jones passed away Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Sunset Elder Care, Maysville, Missouri.
She was born October 29, 1932 to Ivel Ray and Sarah Adaline (Sherard) Castor in Santa Rosa, Missouri.

Following her graduation from Maysville High School, Joan moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and went to work at Commerce Bank. There she would meet the love of her life, Lewis (Louie) E. Jones. On October 18, 1952, she married Louie; they were married for over 32 years. Joan and Louie would move to the Camdenton, Missouri area where they owned a restaurant and later a motel called Reiter’s Court. While Camdenton was, and still is a seasonal destination, they created a year-round business. Joan was talented at handling the business and she was fearless at diving into remodeling their newly acquired motel; she became the plumber, tile layer and appliance repairwoman. Quite the skill set for a young woman at that time.

While Joan and Louie didn’t have biological children, they embraced Karen and Carl Crutchfield as friends and then as their children. During his illness and following Louie’s death in 1985, Karen and Carl, their 5 children and 6 grandchildren became her family; she lovingly celebrated their accomplishments and bragged on them as her kids.

When Joan sold her motel, she moved to Chillicothe to be closer to family. There she poured herself into her church volunteering. It was there in Chillicothe that she started a multi-decade friendship with Carol Cox and Eva Danner Horton.

Her final home was in Maysville where she continued her faith journey at the First Baptist Church; she shared her love of cooking with the community. And, while her eyesight allowed, she started creating beautiful quilts to share with family and friends.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Karen (Carl) Crutchfield, grandchildren Anna (Ben) Price, Stephen (Jessica) Crutchfield, Nathan Crutchfield, Matthew Crutchfield and Elizabeth (Dane) Cockrell, and 6 great-grandchildren that she loved dearly.

In addition, Joan is survived by four siblings, Galen Ivel (Barbara Sue) Castor of Maysville, Everett Leroy (Betty) Castor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ruth Irene (Bud) Nalley of Ava, Missouri and Terry Dean (Patricia) Castor of St. Joseph, Missouri, many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great nephews, and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Ivalah Jean (Jack) Jones, James Walter (Adaline) Castor, and Stewart Lee Castor.

Services will be held at Turner Funeral Home in Maysville on Saturday, May 7, 2022, with visitation beginning at 1 pm and a Celebration of Life at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers/If desired, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church in Maysville, Fairport Cemetery or the DeKalb County Senior Center.
